Geelong’s future leaders revelled in a day of inspiration at last week’s launch of the 2018 Geelong Future Leaders of Industry (GFLOI) and Girls Leading Advanced Manufacturing (GLAM) programs.
During a site tour at Deakin University twenty-four Year 9 and 10 students from schools across Geelong were introduced to the enormous possibilities available through a career in manufacturing and industry. They particularly enjoyed their tours Institute of Frontier Materials, Institute for Intelligent Systems Research & Innovation and Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training, where they saw cutting edge research and technology that is already changing the face of industry.
At the official launch of the programs, David Peart, Geelong Manufacturing Council CEO said, “We’re excited to be co-ordinating the GFLOI and GLAM programs this year. There is a natural synergy between the work we do in supporting manufacturing in the region and developing our young leaders of industry.”
The GFLOI and GLAM participants, who had to apply for entry to the programs, also spent time developing their leadership and communication skills in a workshop that focused on readying them for the workforce.
Students enrolled in the program will participate in industry tours and workshops over the next six months. Prior to graduation in October, they also connect with an industry buddy and gain a work experience placement.
