Major project stakeholders briefed GMC members on opportunities at an information-packed GMC Connect recently.
With the 2026 Commonwealth Games fast approaching, infrastructure projects were high on the agenda. Brett Ince, Regional Director RDV, provided an overview of large-scale accommodation, venue and transport projects that will soon be underway in Geelong and across regional Victoria. The Games will maximise local supply chain opportunities, prioritising First People’s and social procurement, while increasing skills and capacity in key industries, he said.
Opportunities within the transport manufacturing sector were provided by Carl deKoning from the Victorian Government’s Department of Transport and Planning. He pointed to the Victorian Rolling Stock Strategy, with key priorities areas including local content and fleet extension underpinning projects to deliver 25 new “X’Trapolis” trains and 100 next generation trams and zero emissions buses by 2030.
Earthworks have commenced at the $170m Hanwha Defense Australia facility in Avalon. Members were briefed on opportunities opportunities in Land 8116 and the establishment of Micro Factories on the site.
