Geelong wins thanks to innovative fibre process

October 30, 2024

Congratulations to GMC member Loomtex, who are part of a successful team that received a Cooperative Research Centre grant from the Australian Government to help them commercialise and produce unique performance fibres in Geelong.

Australian SME Metis Technologies, in collaboration with CSIRO, have developed a greener chemical process which yields unique flame-resistant fibres that do not melt or drip.  The fibres are also anti-microbial, anti-fungal, non-toxic, absorbent and are designed to be used in health, defence, fire and emergency services.

After proving the one-of-a-kind chemical process in the lab, the grant funding will help Metis Technologies, along with LoomTex and Colan Pty Ltd, to scale up and commercialise the process in Geelong.

There is currently no other commercially viable inherent technology that can impart the same performance capability into one fibre that the patented technology developed by Metis and CSIRO has achieved.
